We’re excited to present K[ingston]-Women from our upcoming exhibition, ‘K-Women: Celebrating Korean Female Artists’ at Kingston Museum.
This section highlights the legacy of female creativity in Kingston, connecting contemporary Korean female artists with influential local women artists from the past two centuries. Featured are the watercolours of Augusta Arbuthnot, pottery by Denise and Rosemary Wren, sculpture by Dora Gordine, and ceramics by Zelda Glanville. You’ll also see striking paintings by Brill Award winners Leo Duff, Eve Roberts, and Cecilia Liu, showcasing the diversity of the female perspective. These remarkable works highlight individual talents and cultural influences, celebrating the unique perspectives of female artists across time.

“앞의 이미지는 아시아인, 여성이라는 특정 정체성이 아닌 ‘나 있는 그대로의 자신’을 다시 한번 생각하게 해준 김진희 작가의 작품입니다.”
영국으로 이주한지 19년.
어디에도 완전히 속하지 못하며 영국에서도 한국에서도 이방인으로 느껴지는 순간들이 많아졌습니다.
그래서인지 이제는 ‘여긴 어디이고 나는 누구이며, 어디에 속해있는가?‘를 고민하기보다 ‘어디에 있든 앞으로 어떤 사람으로 살아낼 것인가?’에 대한 질문을 스스로에게 하며 살아가고 있습니다.
저에게 타국에서의 삶은 내면의 단단함과 성장을 경험하게 했습니다.
여러 모양으로 이주를 경험한 한국 여성작가들의 목소리를 들어볼 수 있는 전시가 다음달 22일부터 킹스턴 박물관에서 시작합니다.
이 전시가 더 많은 사람들의 이야기가 되도록 여러분의 관심과 지원이 필요합니다. 10월 31일에 마감이니 마지막까지 마음을 모아주세요. 그리고 4482[SASAPARI]에서 자원봉사로 일해주고 있는 팀원들 모두에게 감사합니다.

“첫 이미지는 조지아 오키프의 작품. 여성성이라는 사회의 프레임을 깨려고 굉장히 노력한 작가라서 우리 전시와 연결되는 지점을 느꼈어요!”
영국에 살기 시작한 지 어느 새 4년차가 되었습니다. 여전히 많은 어려움을 겪고 있기에 ’자리 잡았다‘는 표현보다는 ’그럭저럭 살아가고 있다.‘ 가 적절합니다. 가끔은 아시아 여성으로서 소수 중의 소수라는 것을 실감하기도 합니다. 심각할 정도는 아니더라도 모든 일상의 순간에 잔잔하게 깔려 있는 그 무언가는 항상 나를 어중간하게 만듭니다.
외국에 거주하는 아시아 여성이라면 모두 이 묘한 어중간함을 알게 모르게 겪고 있지는 않을까? 그렇다면 어떻게 견뎌내고 극복하고 있을까? 아직 영국 햇병아리라 그런지 이런 궁금증은 때때로 머릿속을 잠식합니다. 유독 이번 전시를 준비하면서 마음이 많이 갔던 것도 그런 이유였습니다.
올해 11월, 4482[SASAPARI]와 킹스턴 박물관에서 열리는 전시는 한국 여성 예술가들이 이주, 정체성, 소속감에 대한 고민을 예술로 풀어냅니다. 작품을 보는 것 이상으로 사람들과 연결되고 새로운 공동체를 만들며 서로의 경험을 나눌 수 있는 장입니다. 이것은 누군가에게는 ‘우리’의 이야기이고 또 다른 누군가에게는 ‘이런 이야기도 있습니다.’라고 건네는 시도입니다.
이 전시가 더 많은 사람들에게 다가가고, 참여 예술가들이 더 널리 목소리를 전할 수 있도록, 여러분의 관심과 지원이 필요합니다. 사람들에게 이야기와 공감의 자리가 된다면, 이 전시는 그 자체로 큰 의미를 지닐 것입니다. 이 여정을 함께 해주는 모든 분들께 진심으로 감사드립니다.

As an expat from Korea living in the UK, I’ve encountered many talented individuals, including Korean artists. Some were born here, while others moved from Korea to expand their artistic careers. Some have transitioned to art from different professions, and others found their calling in art after moving to the UK for personal reasons. Each artist has expressed their unique experiences and emotions through their work. This November, 4482 [SASAPRI] and Kingston Museum aim to showcase the journeys of these women Korean artists.
