Through the repeated handwriting of the Korean word 엄마 (eomma), meaning “mum,” Soon Yul Kang constructs an emotional landscape in which language becomes environment. From a distance, the composition appears abstract, yet upon closer viewing it reveals intimacy. The work invites slow looking, encouraging viewers to rediscover the value held within a word that shapes our earliest bonds and continues to resonate beyond language.

Through handwritten repetitions of the Korean words 엄마 (eomma), meaning “mum/mother,” and 사랑 (sarang), meaning “love,” Soon Yul Kang constructs an emotional landscape within the image of a white bowl inspired by jeonghwasu (정화수) — a traditional Korean practice in which purified water is offered at dawn as an act of protection and prayer for loved ones. From a distance, the composition appears minimal; upon closer viewing, it reveals a quiet space of devotion. Her work invites slow looking, where words become material, gathering like water to form an emotional environment that embodies care and remembrance.
