[K-Art Now] Are You Feeling Blue or Green?

Welcome to 4482[SASAPARI] Art Talk sereis!

The theme of 'K-Art Now' this year is 'Colour and Material'. Please join us this special art talk about colour, 'Are you feeling Blue or Green?: Mood and meaning of colour in art' by Dr Alexandra Loske.

Dr. Alexandra Loske is an art historian and curator specializing in the history of colour in Western art, print culture, and architecture. The subject of her doctoral thesis was the use of colour in the Royal Pavilion, Brighton, where she is now curator. She has since held various roles at the University of Sussex and the Royal Pavilion and Museums Trust, Brighton. Alexandra is also an author of books about colour, lecturer, and media contributor, with expertise in art and culture.

Her selected publications are Mary Gartside (c.1755-1819): Abstract Visions of Colour, 111 Places in Brighton and Lewes That You Shouldn't Miss, A Cultural History of Color in the Age of Industry, Pale Fire: New Writing on the Moon, Colour: A Visual History and Moon. Art, Culture, Science.

In this talk, Alexandra will discuss how colour was and is used to express emotion. She will begin with the origins of associating colour with mood in the Romantic period. Alexandra will then focus on various avant-garde movements in art, design and literature of the late 19th and early 20th century, for example, Picasso’s well-known ‘Blue Period’, and lesser-known attempts to assign emotional and symbolic meaning of colour in both art and literature, leading to colour used by abstract artists in the mid-20 th century. The talk will finish with some examples of how recent and contemporary artists use colour as a theme and an expressive tool (such Olafur Eliasson, David Batchelor and Yayoi Kusama).

Kindly RSVP by 24 March 2024 to secure your spot at this remarkable art talk. Space is limited, so we encourage you to respond promptly.

We look forward to your presence at this art talk and the opportunity to think about colour and emotion in art.
